"His music is unique. . . . .
awakening certain energies in
the body and mind, not so much
on a spiritual level but on a deep
historic, mythological and
cultural level, awakening some
sort of hidden and unseen,
unfelt sense, maybe the element
Akash as in sanskrit, (the 5th
element) the one that carries
sound itself."
Jhalib Miller
I am passionate about storytelling, the sense of wonder conveyed through myth and allegory. I am
keenly interested in aspects of a story that illuminate distance and memory, ancient history,
narrative ideas that point to recovery of that which has been lost. I feel that mythology provides both
a vessel and reflection for our passage through life, allowing us to reach a deeper level of the self,
helping teach us who we are. I see my music involved in this way. I wish it to convey this sense of
journey, a discovery for possibilities of the imagination, a doorway leading toward something
unknown, a place to ask what seems impossible to know, a future that can be stepped into for the
first time.  Moreover I see my music embodied in nature, coexistent as voices revealing essential and
dynamic relationships between humanity and the earth itself, exploring the intelligence that exists in
nature and animals, soil, rocks and stars.
Between 1971 and 1985 he worked with London’s contemporary dance community, writing music for
major dance companies and upcoming independent choreographers. He taught Advanced Rhythmic
Music Studies at London Contemporary Dance School. Music compositions emerged in a style
influenced by studies in world music culture.

The unique music to the dance CLASS, with London Contemporary Dance Theatre, opened new
territories in percussion music. By 1983  compositions had taken many directions. He mounted
DREAMHOUSE, a performance work for eight percussionists at the World Music Village,
Commonwealth Institute, London. It was a work that provided the seeds for the recording  EAST
MEETS WEST (BRR18), developed and co-produced with Orlando Kimber in 1984 for Bruton Music
Ltd. By 1985 he relocated to the USA providing music for the modern dance degree course at Cornish
College of the Arts, and performing with the ensemble Gamelan Pacifica.

Resident in Seattle between 1984 -1996, a catalogue of original, percussion-based composition and
recording took different directions that brought several years of collaboration with dance company,
Danzahoy, Caracas, and new works to Venezuela. The music CELESTIAL NILE was later released on
cd,  generating an entirely new catalogue of works. OCEAN OF DREAMS, initially made for poet
James Broughton helped consolidate his interest in the sound relationships and interplay between
environment and music. Continually returning to a large collection of percussion instruments as
primary sound sources, his music equally explores qualities of distant historical time, as well as
spatial domains that convey a sense of future. It’s a music often made for limited performance
productions, kept hidden like a secret somehow, yet this music is without equal, a unique voice in
contemporary music.

In 1996 he returned to Glasgow. In partnership with Signy Jakobsdottir, Luminous Music was created
both as a record label and independent organisation developing innovative projects for education.
New music works continued to emerge. Simultaneously a back catalogue of rarely heard music is
finding its way to publication both in vinyl and through a series of cd’s for Luminous Music Records
and other labels.

Recordings of his music have been published on Invisible Inc, Optimo Records, Touch,
Indipop/Virgin Records, ATV-Bruton Music, What Next?/Non Sequiter Records, O.O. Disks and
Luminous Music.
