As a result of his background in contemporary dance and drumming, Jon Keliehor’s
early works explored music with a primary focus on the textural and melodic
configurations of diverse percussion instruments. Drawing from diverse cultural
influences he was also attracted surreal theatricality and unusual sound
sources.
Most of his music uses lavish amounts of percussion. Music works from 1984
onward, including “East Meet West” and “Celestial Nile" refocused his interests
toward 4th-World, exotic and gamelan related interests where he began to look
closer at links between his ‘old-growth’ instruments and the magical sound-fields
within rainforests of South and North America. As a result of his work on dance
projects in Venezuela, concerns for the environment grew rapidly.
His current music is fluid and multi-dimensional. Metallic gong textures in his
music offer a sense of spatiality, expanse, with a result that seems somehow
alchemic. Behind it all there is a search for cultural origins, and interests to
bring a
music mythology for a new era.

There are sacred things in this world . . . music is one of them.
Thanks for taking a look through this site. Here is a bit of background
on Jon Keliehor, artist collaborations and music projects.
Luminous Music opened its doors in Scotland in 1997 as a means to enable both
performance and educational projects.
As an artist-run, small-music label, Luminous Music Studios began to record and
publish the music of it’s artists in 2000 in Glasgow, releasing the seminal album:
Celestial Nile. The label has retained an independent and experimental focus,
supporting and producing music compositions and film work.
Luminous Music has operated in several capacites that include: music studio and
facilities to produce music and film; music provision for contemporary dance
training and performance; development/presentation of creative music projects.
Between 1997-2018 Luminous Music ran a series of innovative music projects
focusing on music access and creativity. Projects developed by Jon Keliehor and
Signy Jakobsdottir, provided performance platforms and workshops for pupils and
groups of all ages and abilities. Events were creative and expansive. Interest
grew
rapidly, and with it a variety of themes and designs emerged.
From 1999 onward Luminous Music produced workshops and projects for
organisations and agents that included Inspiration Festivals, Glasgow City
Council,
Refrenfrewshire Council, Perthshire Council, Perth College, Aberdeen City
Council,
Tramway, Scottish Ballet, Scottish Youth Dance, Dance Base, Royal Conservatoire
Scotland, Scottish Executive, Gamelan Naga Mas, Room 13, Dance House, Rosina
Bonsu, Ruth Mills, Bridgeman Arts, Turning Point Scotland.
The provision of authentic and unusual world percussion instruments, as well as
project designs that encouraged unhindered access and creativity from
participants,
allowed a lengthy time of development.
